Jewish artists have played a significant role in twentieth-century Scottish art. Estonian-born Benno Schotz (1891-1984) served as Head of Sculpture at the Glasgow School of Art from 1938 until his retirement in 1961. Schotz was also chair and organiser of the 1951 Glasgow Festival of Jewish Arts ' an impressive event that included exhibitions of art, books, and ritual objects, concerts, theatre performances and lectures. Other prominent Jewish artists in Scotland include Hannah Frank (1908-2008), Josef Herman (1911-2000), Holocaust survivor Marianne Grant (1921-2007) and Austrian refugee Hilda Goldwag (1912-2008). The Glasgow Jewish Male Voice Choir formed in the 1930s and met regularly for more than fifty years, succeeded more recently by the Glasgow Jewish Choral Society and the Glasgow Jewish Singers. Garnethill Synagogue cantor Isaac Hirshow (1883-1956) was also a composer and in 1938 became the University of Glasgow's first ever Music graduate.
